He was drafted as the first overall pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 1987 MLB Draft at the age of 17. His combination of power, speed, athleticism, and defensive prowess made him an immediate standout. He made his MLB debut in 1989 at the age of 19. In his rookie season, he showcased his immense talent and quickly made an impact. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award, becoming the youngest player to receive that honor at the time. Griffey Jr. hit .264 with 16 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in his rookie campaign.
