SOLD - 1989 Dwight Gooden #270

$22.50

PSA 9: #53888918 - Mint

By 1989, Dwight Gooden’s performance on the mound had declined compared to his earlier years. Gooden had achieved superstar status with the New York Mets in the mid-1980s, particularly during his historic 1985 season. However, various factors, including personal issues and substance abuse problems, impacted his career trajectory. In 1987, for example, he tested positive for cocaine and entered rehab, missing a portion of the season. While he rebounded in 1988 with a solid season, his performance in 1989 was a step back. During the 1989 season, Gooden posted a 17-6 record with a 3.83 ERA. While those numbers were respectable, they did not reflect the same level of excellence he had previously displayed. His strikeout rate also decreased significantly, dropping to 5.7 strikeouts per nine innings, which was a significant decline compared to his peak years.
